Gabriel was about to high five Alexander for saving his rear end when he remembered the mana. It appeared to him as a cloud of white leaving the dead or dying draonran. From the way Alexander’s gaze followed it, Gabriel couldn’t have been the only one to notice. He figured they could share the mana, but he had no idea how well it would work.

He visualized a black hole opening up within his core, his soul. An inescapable void with a pull not even light could escape. The result was underwhelming. Where he expected the mana to be instantly drawn inside, instead he watched as it drifted toward him with all the lethargic urgency of a teenager being forced to go to school.

But what did I think was going to happen? he thought. Technically his mana siphoning technique wasn’t different from what he did while meditating. The difference was he didn’t have the full undivided focus meditation brought to bring to the task.

Only half of the mana went toward Gabriel. The other pulled away toward Alexander, almost like it was caught in a net of some sort.

The momentary distraction caused the mana he absorbed to start pulling away from him. Gabriel redoubled his efforts and drew his half of the mana in. It gathered up within the core of his soul where the very gravitational pull he envisioned concentrated the mana into a sphere of white light.

Well at least that’s not running away anymore, he thought. It’s not fast progress but I’ll take what I can get.

Turning his gaze inward, the mana felt clean and pure. For a creature they found living in a poisonous swamp, he was expecting something a lot spicier. The draonran were probably drinking up and eating up poison all over the place here, Gabriel mused. But the mana was as clean and pure as the mana he felt his own soul generating after he purged it of Zalasar’s corruption. Yet it didn’t feel like a part of him. Not yet at least.

Discipline: Mana Retention +1

Discipline: Mana Siphon +1

“That was too close,” Alexander panted.

“The killer Bambi with a sound cannon or the mana getting away?” Gabriel asked, completely ignoring the poison quite literally eating him from the inside out.

“Both,” Alexander answered.

Gabriel was honestly surprised Hartford got that reference. Maybe you did have some sort of childhood, he thought.

Lucah scrambled over to them. “Are you two alright?”

“Mostly.” Gabriel scanned the forest. “Where’s Luna? I kinda need her help. Like right now.”

Luna stumbled out of the woods. She hunched over, clutching at her knees, gasping for breath. “There were… There were so many of them.” She let out a little whine.

“Alive and well it seems,” Hartford said in an almost scolding tone.

Gabriel chuckled. He found the girl’s antics endearing if nothing else. Even if she made him worry far too much about her wellbeing on the battlefield. Which was saying something considering her brother was the hot headed one.

Lucah let out a breath. “I am glad to see that turned out well.
